What Do September’s Shutdowns and Restarts Signal for China’s Black Silicon Carbide Supply?

China’s black silicon carbide industry saw both production shutdowns and restarts in September, reflecting continued adjustments in operating conditions across major producing regions.

Seven Black Silicon Carbide Producers Halt Production in September

A total of seven Chinese black silicon carbide producers suspended production in September, including:

  • 3 producers in Ningxia
  • 2 producers in Gansu
  • 1 producer in Heilongjiang
  • 1 producer in Xinjiang

The seven producers had a combined production capacity of 375,000 MT, equivalent to an average capacity of approximately 53,571 MT per producer.

From January through September 2026, these seven producers produced a combined 59,800 MT of black silicon carbide, with an average operating rate of only 15.95%.

Five Producers Resume Production in Gansu

At the same time, five black silicon carbide producers resumed production in September, all of them located in Gansu Province.

Their combined production capacity totaled 188,000 MT, averaging 37,600 MT per producer.

From January through September 2026, these five producers recorded a combined cumulative shutdown period of 10 months, averaging 2 months per producer.

The resulting cumulative production loss was estimated at 28,166.67 MT.

Market Takeaway

September’s data show that China’s black silicon carbide supply remained in a period of active adjustment.

While five producers in Gansu returned to production, seven producers across Ningxia, Gansu, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang suspended operations. The shutdown capacity of 375,000 MT was also significantly higher than the 188,000 MT of capacity represented by restarted producers.

For buyers, this means that headline production capacity alone may not fully reflect actual market availability. Operating rates, regional production conditions and producer restarts should remain important indicators to watch when evaluating supply and lead times.
